Tadalafil

How it works

Tadalafil is a phosphodiesterase type-5 (PDE5) inhibitor. During sexual arousal it helps relax blood vessels and increase blood flow to the penis, making an erection easier to get and keep. Its defining feature is duration: the effect can last considerably longer than sildenafil or vardenafil, which is why it’s often called the “weekend” treatment. It still only works alongside arousal.

Dosage & how to take it

As-needed start

10 mg before anticipated sex; can be taken without regard to a tight time window.

Adjusting

Your prescriber may raise it to 30 mg or lower it to 10 mg based on effect and tolerance.

Maximum (as needed)

30 mg in any 24-hour period.

Daily option

2.5 mg or 5 mg once a day at the same time, for “always ready” use without timing around a dose.

Duration

As-needed doses can support erections for up to 36 hours.

Food

Can be taken with or without food.

Important safety information — who should not take it

Common side effects

Usually mild and short-lived: headache, flushing, a blocked or runny nose, indigestion, back or muscle ache (a little more typical of tadalafil), and dizziness. Stop and contact a clinician if side effects are severe or persistent.
